ABOUT

Born in Ferrara (Italy) 1974.

Marco Marzocchi's photography is the search for people, atmospheres and places of the past that mix with the present in order to define it and make sense of it. It is beauty in everyday simplicity and in those small details that hide joy, fear, or pain, elements that combine like in a poem.
An extremely personal and autobiographical story taken at times urgently and sometimes with patient research.

His work alternates impulsiveness and rationality, both in shooting and editing. But nothing is casual. Everything is traced back to a narrative that is both introspective and open to the outside world.

A succession of questions and answers and yet more questions, to give meaning to deep dynamics, to facts from the past, to love, to photography itself

CAHIER 10B

Heart isue n#75
HeartAs important as heart engagement is in the personal sphere, its absence in the political sphere is a scandal. In view of this political failure, the question arises again and again whether personal commitment releases the state from its responsibility. Conversely, it is also popular to excuse one's own inaction by pointing to the responsibility of politics. Neither line of thinking has much to do with genuine empathy.

PHOTOBOOKS. ART PAGE BY PAGE

The book shows a selection of international photobooks from the last decades, with a focus on the photobook as an art object and a storytelling medium. The interaction between photography, material, binding, form, and format offers many possibilities for experimentation and demonstrates the potential of the photobook as an artistic medium unto itself.
With essays by Jörg Colberg, Silvia Gaetti and Calin Kruse
The book was published in conjunction with the exhibition Photobooks. Art Page by Page, co-curated by Calin Kruse / dienacht Publishing for the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig, Germany.
Size: 10 x 24 cm, 148 pages

FISHEYE MAGAZINE #50

“Instinct”

Fifty issues for a daily newspaper takes less than two months to design, for Fisheye it took us more than eight years. Not that we are lazy, but it takes enthusiasm to tell a story, especially with images. The story of a medium that never stops transforming itself in a magazine that takes its time, it sometimes sparks. Fisheye is not about photography but about photographers, authors, those who create with the real and the unreal. In their complexity, they have brilliantly allowed us to better tell the world in which we live, or at least, we think we live. They inspire us, exalt us, transcend us, sometimes irritate us, but do not leave us indifferent in any way. When I look at the covers of Fisheye, I see joys, pride, disappointments, contradictions, late closings, moments of life, talents, unknowns, stars, women, men, a dog, a cat, birds and now a snake. Emblem of the vital energy by its moult, this animal comes to act the successful transformation, if I judge from your numerous comments, of our new concept.

FISHEYE PHOTO REVIEW 2021.22

1.5 kg of photos, 291 photographers, 564 images.
For the fifth consecutive year, Fisheye sums up a year of explorations, curations and digital publications in a physical book with a refined aesthetic.
In 376 pages, 291 photographers, 564 images and almost 1.5 kg, we take the time to observe. All of these series were featured over this past year, i.e., during the pandemic. A suspended time, where dreamlike images have taken on an unprecedented role in our mostly often direct, even crude, relationship with the world—almost as if it were necessary to find crossroads to transmit a mental projection, to reinvent a relationship with reality in order to better embellish it.
The Fisheye Photo Review 2021.22, a true “bible” of contemporary photography, a handbook of inspirations, a guide of rising stars offers unexpected connections between fashion, documentary, intimate and experimental projects. This book gives a unique insight into today’s visual arts, and proves that there are no limits to audacity. Whether they work with cyanotype, film or digital, the 300 or so artists published here send us a unique and positive message. No, creativity is not at rest!

YOGURT: QUARANTINE FLAVOUR

[…] This Yogurt flavour is a charm more than ever, made by the projection of unlived lives, of frames inhabited by lonely people. Made of out of focus identities. But also by irony and colour. Among the thousands of images we received, we have tried to isolate a tale which is as lateral as possible, with a deliberately airy but intimate connotation. This is not to wallow in a pitiless, uselessly disturbing and dull narration. We have selected eighty-seven authors to lead us into an emotive spiral. Moments of introspection are chasing more optimistic languages. And the empty room where the present has inhabited is filled with images.

Quarantine is meant to be an oniric journey because it is on the threshold of dreams that we can grasp the complexity of reality.

OYSTER’ BY MARCO MARZOCCHI, PUBLISHED BY VOID.

THE BOOK

The "Ouroboros" is an important symbol to Marco and his work. It relates to evolution. To being reborn. The influence of his parents on his life and how it reflects back to the way he views his parents. To Marzocchi, everything is connected.

The symbol guided many of the design concepts presented in ‘Oyster’. every book connects to each other. There are 480 different covers. Every snake is a cover of a book and the back cover of the next. Turning the 480 books into a singular piece.

‘Oyster’ is a 84 page Leporello book. This form allows the reader to have a free and non linear read of the publication. It allows a circular reading. Again, an Ouroboros

DUMMY AWARD ‘23 - BULLET
“In his captivating photobook “BULLET,” Marco Marzocchi invites us on an intimate journey through the intricacies of his deeply personal quest for meaning. Consisting of 500 images of people, archives and landscapes, flanked by short texts, poems and material which has been gathered over several years, “BULLET” forms a summary of the 48 years which make up Marzocchi’s life until now. It is a search for the right questions to ask in order to make sense of past experiences.

Impulsive snapshots and short written notes which gradually become poems intersected by archival material form a dense rhythm of questions, suggested answers and yet deeper questions. Marzocchi skillfully navigates through the complexities of his own narrative, using the qualities of photography as a medium to articulate the ineffable, to trace connections and draw conclusions through association.

“BULLET” is a nuanced exploration of not just Marzocchi’s life but also the universal quest for understanding and searching for meaning”.
